Andrea Canepa (Lima, 1980) kicks off the Scuola Piccola Zattere programme and book series with a project that exemplifies the institution’s vision and ethos of art education as a grounds for shared experimentation.
Geometrie del Possibile is the permanent installation that the artist created for the entrance area of the Scuola. The space is populated by sculptural components that invite the public to move them around and experience the work themselves. More than objects to contemplate, the pieces are like marks on a score to be interpreted through movement and interaction. The work connects the artist’s research on the nexus between architectural form and bodily action with educational questions central to the Scuola’s first year of activity.
One painting in the series showed a human pyramid performed during carnival. I had always believed that this was a tradition unique to Catalonia […] The detail I noticed in the painting that day was that, unlike in the Catalan castells, the participants were not only using their bodies to form these pyramids but also sticks and planks. It struck me that objects and flesh were leaning on each other, cooperating somehow, each supporting similar forces. Every element—whether object or body—was playing a structural role in this striking, scaffold-like composition.

The book relays this experience from multiple points of view: the genesis of the project laying the foundations of the new institution, the role of ludic pedagogies and the dimension of active perception within Canepa’s work, alongside contributions emerging from the workshop programme put together by the artist. Residency, educational programme and publishing series intertwine as moments in an ongoing process, demonstrating how the Scuola’s approach allows the different formats to blend together.
