RUSTY S. & PITTI BLUE I-IV
by MRZB, curated by Achille Filipponi
RUSTY S. & PITTI BLUE I-IV is a one-act multimedia performance in eight fragments performed by a spectral cast of objects, sculptures and costumes activated by a sound and light score. The piece relies on a frantic layering of text, sculptures, costumes, recorded music, tape and paper collages, actions and gestures, horizontally sequenced spaces, blaring screens and performed images. The protagonists are RUSTY S. & PITTI BLUE, two death-like-mechanical puppets, sculpturally crafted from a mosaic of found and residual materials scattered by a blaze at the Baraccopoli di Lungo Stura Lazio, Turin.
An audience of mannequins, retrieved from past works, is cut into pieces and fiberglassed back together in Frankenstein-like anthropomorphic shapes: their sleep interrupted by fifteen minutes of feverish dreams, spiraling them out of their bodies in psychedelic scenettes set between ‘’the stage’’,
a wall of projection and two collages. Power plays, spleens, and lullabies are mixed and merged as allegories to the age of total anesthesia.
A freak-show is dragged by a carriage into the suburbs. A woman, long black hair, hard features drives in the gray summer nothingness. The PIGS follow her, spitting, burping, grunting. The carriage stops, the curtain opens, Le Sorelle: RUSTY S. & PITTI BLUE appear, sleeping, sweating under the mid-afternoon sunlight. As the camera closes in, an eruption of images: people herded into trains and buses like cattle, sitting for hours in tiny chariots, packed into long rows of identical gray cubicles, twitching their fingers on little frames. Somebody screams, the scream turns into PAPPY, PAPPY turns to laughter and to sleep again, an anxious and narcotic kind.
RUSTY S. & PITTI BLUE I-IV has been produced between Turin, Amsterdam and Florence and realized with the support of NAM at Manifattura Tabacchi.
MRZB is an art group based between Amsterdam and Milano, formed in Bologna in 2014 and run by Andrea parenti, Désirée Nakouzi De Monte, Filippo Tocchi and Pietro Cortona – their nomadic and collaborative practice questions the processuality of creation as a stacking of tensions and forces – MRZB draws on the marginal, the domestic, the discarded, the suburban – as removed psychedelic and hallucinatory cosmos – to traverse the specters and residues of a centripetal and massified reality.
